Another World

A Live Life Lesson

One of the reasons I learned to scuba dive was to check out the world underwater; a world we otherwise don’t get to see.

The first time I dove after getting certified, was in Hawaii. Snorkeling is fun on the surface, but by going deep with scuba diving I could swim in and around the rocks and tunnels and get up-close and personal with the sea life. I remember how different it felt in this environment. I had to be mindful of everything I was doing. I had to stay off the rocks and try not to touch anything. Respect for the delicate ecosystem is of the utmost importance because it's home to all sea life. Every part matters.

As a beginner, it was challenging to say balanced while also trying to be careful not to disrupt anything. That was when I saw this sea turtle napping on the rocks.

As soon as I did, I stopped worrying about the techniques of diving and started enjoying my surroundings.

With caution, I approached the sleeping turtle so that I could get a better look. I wanted to see if its eyes were open and if any bubbles were coming from its nostrils. Nothing! It stood very still and blended so well with the rocks. Great for the turtle to keep predators at bay. “Do sea turtles have predators?” I thought. Not really, but I read tiger sharks are known to feed on adult sea turtles from time to time.

Getting to see the turtle up close was fascinating. It made me appreciate their existence along with the rest of life in the ocean world; a world that is sadly all too easy for us to neglect. I’ll admit, it is something I don't always think about when I'm home living everyday life. But today, on World Turtle Day, I’m reminded of our wildlife friends, the sea turtles, and the importance of taking care of our underwater ecosystems.

Celebrate with me today — World Turtle Day!

If you can, take up scuba diving to see these sea creatures up close too. It's a great way to learn an appreciation for our ocean environment.
